Controversial books challenge the existing norms of society. Some posit theories of superior human beings or alternate explanations for phenomena of the physical world that run counter to accepted scientific and sociological standards and conventions. Some advocate radical changes in lifestyle, some make encourage or justify hate based on gender, race, class, religion, or sexual orientation. Others preach tolerance or challenge what the authors' see as a conservative and unfair status quo in society. The same books are not controversial in all places or to all people, because different social norms, religious beliefs and cultural expectations prevail in different cultures. Some controversial books are banned, some bestsellers.
