ISO 8652

From ArticleWorld

ISO 8652 is the international standard that describes the Ada programming language. The correct full name of the 1995 version is actually ISO/IEC 8652:1995(E), but the short form has entered common usage.

The standard was designed by the Ada Working Group, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC 22/WG 9, working for the International Organization for Standardization. The Ada Information Clearinghouse later released the full text of the standard into public domain..

The IS 8652 standard was the starting point for other ADA-related standards, namely 'ISO/IEC 15291: Information technology - Programming languages - Ada Semantic Interface Specification (ASIS) and ISO/IEC 18009: Information technology - Programming languages - Ada: Conformity assessment of a language processor (ACATS)'.

Reasons

The need to develop an Ada standard was quite stringent as the popularity of the language outside the Department of Defense grew rapidly. The workgroup's report stated that Interest in Ada from the educational sector is growing. A 1996 survey in the US show 345 colleges, universities, commercial and governmental institutions offered 656 college-equivalent courses in Ada. The report also cited several important uses of Ada, in avionics applications, train control systems and medical analysis devices.

The standardization effort was a stepping stone in Ada's development, making Ada a more common choice for international adoption.
