Composition
Shaving cream is sold in cans and is packaged under extremely high pressure. When applied to the skin it creates a lather that protects the skin from cuts and razor burn. Originally the cans contained a compressed gas that had CFCs in it. Recently it has been discovered that propane, butane and isobutene can be used instead. Since there is a large amount of water in compressed shaving cream cans, the normally highly flammable hydrocarbons are not a fire hazard in this treatment.
Popular shaving cream brands
Popular brands in the United States include Gillette, Edge, Barbasol and Colgate. Many of these brands also make razors or other personal care items.
Shaving cream for men
Shaving cream most traditionally has been used by men. They typically apply it to their faces in order to avoid cuts or razor burn.
Shaving cream for women
Over the years shaving cream varieties have been developed with the intent of marketing product lines to women. Many of these contain moisturizing and softening properties (like aloe). Women typically use these on their legs, underarms and bikini lines.
Alternatives
Facial soap or cream can be used in a pinch if one cannot find shaving cream. Also electric razors typically do not require the use of shaving cream. Some newer electric razors, however, feature the option for a wet shave, where one can shave with shaving cream and water.
