Biotechnology refers to the study and manipulation of biological organisms to prepare products meant to benefit human beings. This technology contributes to several areas including genetically-modified (GM) food production, waste disposal, mining and medicine. Biotechnology can be put to highly destructive uses as well, in the form of biological weapons that can put to death people in their thousands within a short span of time. Biotechnology, though an emerging field, is subject to many controversies, especially those regarding human cloning and genetic engineering.
