Probability and statistics is that branch of mathematics which deals with random phenomena, that is, experiments (or events) with unpredictable outcomes. The study of probability began in the 16th century, when mathematicians started studying games of chance. Probability and statistical methods are crucial tools applied throughout most of the known sciences, including social science, biology, economics, computer science, physics and chemistry. Statistics is also used in sample surveys, which involves making estimations or predictions about a parent population based on data from a sample.
