Systems theory refers to the interdisciplinary field which involves the relationships between systems. This theory was propounded in the middle of the last century and was based mainly on the principles of engineering and the philosophy of science. It later spearheaded the growth of many other fields like political science, management theory and economics. Psychotherapy too has developed as a result of this theory. It has also played an important role in communications and control, which both form a class of study known as cybernetics.
