Arithmetic is a sub-field of mathematics which involves the use and recording basic operations on numerals. The study of arithmetic has arisen from the most elementary form of mathematics, which is counting. Arithmetic, furthermore, involves the manipulation of numbers using various ways of counting, namely, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
Arithmetic has been used and developed by civilizations all through the course of history. The Babylonians used a base of 60 for counting, while most others used base 10, or the decimal system. The decimal system continues to be popular today.
