From ArticleWorld

Asbestos is a filament-like mineral that is mined in places such as Canada, Africa and Australia. It can be pulverized into tiny fibers that are barely visible to the human eye. Because it is flame-retardant and fiber-like, it was woven or incorporated into things such as electrical insulation, building insulation, brake shoes and ceiling tiles. The relationship between asbestos and diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma was eventually made clear and the substance has been banned in over 80 countries. There is much litigation surrounding asbestos producers and those workers who became ill being exposed to it.
