Chemical elements are chemical substances that can't be turned into other elements with simple chemical procedures. The atom is the smallest such compound and is linked to the Atomic number, Z. It is defined as being the number of protons that defines a chemical element. An atom also has neutrons in its composition. The lightest chemical elements are hydrogen and helium, with hydrogen being considered as the first substance that appeared after the Big Bang.
