Manufacturing refers to the production of goods in a particular industry. The finished products may be utilized by consumers or used for other manufacturing processes. Manufacturing in olden times used to be carried out by hand by employing labour, but modern day manufacturing is largely mechanized and automated. An important form of manufacturing is assembly, in which raw material is gathered and shaped to form a final product. Another form is extraction, as in the extraction of metals from their ores. A third form could be alteration, as in leather goods obtained from animal hides.
