Marriage is the foundation for families in most societies. The term marriage can denote social, legal or religious connections and it is typically understood as a social contract between a man and a woman, which implies a monogamous relationship. In some societies, however, polygamy is still a common form of marriage. Currently in some Western societies, same-sex marriages and civil unions are recognized. In most societies, marriages begin with a wedding ceremony, commonly followed by a wedding reception or wedding breakfast. Marriages can end via divorce or annulment.
