From ArticleWorld

New wave music was created in the early 1980’s in an attempt to steer the music away from the death of disco and the ending of the punk genre. Much of the music draws its roots from these two genres, Euro disco, and also from the rebellious style that was becoming a standard at the time. New wave was the stepping stone for many other genres of music to come. It was an alternate means of music that became a dominant force and is still present in many genres that are out now.
