Personality disorders are inflexible, long term behaviour patterns that affect personal and social functioning. The disorder must be able to be traced back to adolescence or early adulthood and is usually obvious as the behaviour is at odds with the cultural norm. There are ten personality disorders described by the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
