South America is a continent crossed by the equator, with most of it existing in the southern hemisphere on the Earth. The Pacific Ocean borders South America to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Geographically, South America is home to the Andes Mountains, which run nearly the length of the entire continent. South America also boasts the Amazon Rainforest and the mighty Amazon River. More than 360 million people live in the 14 states of South America. Spanish is the national language in all states except Brazil, where it is Portuguese.
