English is the dominant language in many nations such as Britain, USA, commonwealth countries and erstwhile British Colonies. It is the most widely learnt second language with about a thousand million people who can speak English. The most exhaustive of the English Dictionaries are Oxford, Cambridge and Longman, found and used the world over. English is also known as the global language by virtue of being spoken most widely.

Global acceptance

It is no wonder that English is the official language for airplanes and airports. Scientific Community is aided hugely by having English as a common platform for exchange of ideas. However, the widespread use of the kind of English on the internet and other interpersonal forum has antagonized the stricter adherents of the language. Dominance of English has caused the redundancy of many local languages and along with it cultures, too. English words, due to its widespread usage have found its way into many other languages. Similarly, it has borrowed words from other regional languages.


Historical language

English uses Latin alphabets and the written English is not phonetic. It is therefore difficult to master, and words and their spellings have to be memorized, being made up of twenty six letters, five vowels and twenty-one consonants. English grammar is not as elaborative and uses the help of intonation to bring out certain meanings . Intonation , means emphasizing on a word to alter the intended meaning. English vocabulary is very large and at the same time, synonyms and antonyms play a big role in enriching the language by enabling to express feelings and variations that can be fine tuned. Some of the more apparent influence of bringing out meanings of words in regionally afflicted English is in terms of “slang”, whose use can not be disregarded given global acceptance of the same.
