Foobar2000

From ArticleWorld

foobar2000 is a freeware audio player for Microsoft Windows, developed by Peter Pawlowski. foobar2000 features a simple interface, metadata support and high-quality audio output, with a theoretical maximum sampling rate and bit depht that exceeds even the capacity of professional audio equipment. It is closed-source, but it features a powerful API.

Do note that the correct name of the program is, indeed, foobar2000. This articles is named Foobar2000 due to technical restrictions.

Features

Foobar2000 has a great deal of features, making it an excellent alternative to other audio players. The most appreciated features include:

  • The TAGZ scripting language, which allows the user to change the metadata shown in any place, not just the playlist
  • Full Unicode-support on Windows NT/2000 and later
  • An extensive and flexible API, allowing many options, from completely modifying the user interface to decoding less used audio formats
  • Kernel streaming, ASIO output and a diskwriter component
  • Last.fm and iPod support through a plugin

Foobar2000 has been designed with a low memory consumption in mind, and indeed it does make very effective use of the resources, allowing it to run even on less powerful computers.

In its current state, foobar2000 is quite stable and has many features. However, it is sometimes subject to criticism due to the difficulties in configuring it (skinning, for example, requires some effort), and for proving to be quite unstable sometimes. Nevertheless, many users prefer it over its competitors.
