A father is in search of peace after his wife’s suicide. He moves to the country with his daughter and confronts insanity. His daughter has developed a relationship with a devilish, imaginary friend. Inscrutable events occur, and the daughter undergoes a change in personality.

Plot

When David Calla(Robert DeNiro)decides that a drastic change is necessary after his wife, Alison(Amy Irving)commits suicide, he and his daughter, Emily(Dakota Fanning)relocate to a small town.

At first, everything is going well, but in time Emily develops a strange obsession. She conjures up an imaginary companion, Charlie, who seems to have a life of his own with her. Her behavior becomes quite bizarre, as Charlie takes on more importance, and a strange power in her life.

Her conduct puzzles David because disturbing incidents are beginning to occur. But the more he questions her actions, the more mentally unstable he becomes. Charlie is behind everything. Something looks very wrong to David, and it is!

Resolution

Ultimately, the ending that was chosen for DVD and domestic theatrical release was that Emily is under the care of a guardian, Katherine(Franke Janssen). While Emily is preparing for school, she draws a picture of a second head on the shoulders of her own body.

Marketing facts

There was tremendous media hype during the promotion of the film concerning the release with various endings. No one was to be informed about which ending was used. The process which was employed to deliver the film was shrouded in secrecy to exploit fan enthusiasm.
