A historian is a person who studies and is knowledgable in the field of history. Throughout the years, there have been many well-known historians who have brought to life the past lives of many famous individuals and places.


Well-Known Historians


Herodotus: Greek historian, who was dubbed the “father of history.” Born in 484 BC in Halicarnassus (which is now Bodrum, Turkey). Most of his work has been divided into nine parts, where the first six present an introductory into the lives of most of the peoples within the ancient world. He pays attention to their customs, legends, history and traditions. The last three parts touch upon the rivalries and conflicts from the early 5th century BC between the Greeks and Persians. Herodotus died during 425 BC.

Thomas Macauley: (1800-1859) This historian was son of a former African Colonial Governor and anti-slavery philanthropist Zachary Macaulay. His masterpiece, The History of England from the Accession of James the Second, was highly popular. The first two volumes sold 13,000 sets in four months, whereas the third and fourth volumes sold twice the amount in half the time.

Adam Hart-Davis: (1943-) This British author, photographer and broadcaster, gained notoriety in the UK for presenting the television series called Local Heroes and What the Romans Did for Us. This show sparked several spin-offs, including: the Victorians (What the Victorians Did for Us), the Tudors (What the Tudors Did for Us), and the Stuarts (What the Stuarts Did for Us).

Lord Acton: (1834-1902) Wrote many highly regarded articles and essays, as well as assisted in the creation of the English Historical Review (1886). He is also known for his lengthy, uncompleted writings dealing with the History of Liberty.

Antony Beever: (1946-) Award-winning historian who wrote Stalingrad, which was first published in 1998. Awards that he has received for this work includes the first Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson Prize for History and the Hawthornden Prize for Literature in 1999. All of this helped him to attain celebrity status as a military historian.
