Sauerkraut has been a part of German cuisine for many years. It is created by using cabbage that is white and is fermented in a variety of lactic acid bacteria. The word sauerkraut is German in origin and means sour cabbage. Most cold areas in Europe eat sauerkraut and it is consumed in the United States as well as Canada.

Sauerkraut is a common and traditional ingredient in German cuisine, French cuisine, and the Slavic cuisines that are located in Central and Eastern Europe. Sauerkraut is also eaten in parts of Italy. Sauerkraut that is eaten raw is often eaten as a relish with meat dishes like bratwurst or hot dogs. Raw sauerkraut that has oil and onions is served as a salad. Generally, sauerkraut is cooked before it is eaten. Some dishes that have sauerkraut are as follows: sauerkraut soup, stews, and filled dumplings. Drinks that are served with sauerkraut dishes include beer and white wine. There are also apples and bacon put in some cooked sauerkraut dishes. In North America, sauerkraut is a main ingredient in Reuben sandwiches.

Healthy ingredient

Raw sauerkraut is a very healthy food because it is a good source of vitamin C and other nutrients. Sauerkraut is a good food to eat during winter in order to help prevent sickness. It is claimed that Captain James Cook always had a supply of sauerkraut on his ship because he thought it would prevent scurvy.
