An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews or Shamela, or as it is more commonly known, is believed to be written by Henry Fielding and first published in April, 1741 under the name of Mr. Conny Reyker.

Synopsis

The main character of the book is Pamela Andrews. Pamela is not the typical kind, chaste, servant-girl but is a scheming, wicked, tempest, who is trying to entrap her master, Squire Bobby into marriage.

Fielding

Pamela was a very popular novel by Fielding’s contemporary and rival, Samuel Richardson, Pamela Fielding is purposely exposing the weaknesses of Richardson work, but in a satirical way. Another novel by Fielding parodying Pamela although, not so obviously is The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and his friend which came out in February 1742. The novel is more commonly known as Joseph Andrews.
