Babydoll

From ArticleWorld

A babydoll is a type of lingerie.

Use

A babydoll is intended to be worn as nightwear by a female. Similarly, a short dress intended for use during the day is referred to as a babydoll dress. The word is, at times, used as two words, baby doll, or hyphenated, baby-doll.

Since the gown also resembles what infants wear (for easy changing of diapers), it is also commonly used among adults who engage in a sexualized form of play centered on the idea of infantilism.

Regardless, it is an eroticized item for adult apparel, often allowing for exposure of a woman’s breasts.

Appearance

A babydoll is a short-length nightgown or negligee. Often, it is trimmed with lace, bows, ruffles or ribbons. The straps are usually thin and delicate.

At times, it is made of a sheer or translucent fabric like nylon or chiffon. It can also be made of a luxury material like high thread count cotton or silk.

It is often sold with a matching pair of sexy panties, since the dress is typically short enough to allow for these to be seen.

History

The name babydoll is believed to have been popularized by a 1956 movie starring Carroll Baker called “Baby Doll.” At the time of production, new synthetic fabrics and boutique retailing were flourishing, which made purchase both easy and affordable.

Ever since, the style has been popular for adults.

Others, however, attribute the babydoll nightgown’s popularity to the short, lace-trimmed bed jackets and bed capes that were popular in the 1930s and 1940s.
