Casual sex can have different meanings to different people, based on the way each individual defines sex. People can define casual sex by what body parts are involved, physical signs of sexual arousal that are displayed or the subjective feeling of one or both parties. Kissing, oral sex or full sexual intercourse can all fall under the definition of casual sex. What makes engaging in these activities be considered casual sex is that they are engaged in by two people who are not in a monogamous relationship or friendship.

Terminology

Casual sex is often referred to as “hooking up” or “friends with benefits” these terms further highlight the fact that a couple is non-monagamous. Sometimes, this is referred to as an “extended hookup” or “regular hookup” These are prolonged instances of casual sex interactions where parties regularly meet for casual sex. Many enjoy the “sex with no strings attached” as a way to satisfy their needs without having the commitment of a relationship.

The rise of casual sex

As more people could have sex with fewer risks (thanks to condoms and birth control), casual sex became a more viable – and increasingly practiced – option. Plus, the Internet has allowed a rise of sexual promiscuity among young people that rivals that of the 1970s. Some people consider prostitution to be casual sex; others consider it to be a business. Swingers clubs and parties (where committed or casual couples share and trade partners) have seen an increasing rise over the years, enhanced by the advent of the Internet and chat rooms.

The risks

Casual sex focuses on pleasure; however, with pleasure comes risk.

There are emotional risks: Someone may get to involved, you could destroy a friendship or hurt someone in the process. It could cause problems if a future spouse or committed partner finds out about previous indiscretions. And, naturally, there is the risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease.
