Acronyms are abbreviations written with first letters of words. The pronunciation is obtained based on these letters. Another term that is used as a synonym is initialisms but acronyms is the word most used for this type of abbreviations. Acronyms started to be popular during the 20th century. They appeared because technology evolved and more complex terms were being implemented. Abbreviations became a must and thus acronyms started to be used.
