From ArticleWorld
An eclipse is the casting of a shadow on one celestial body by another. Eclipses occur when a planet or moon moves into alignment between a light source and another planet or moon, blocking the light source on one end and shadowing the planet on the other. The word eclipse is often misused. A solar eclipse is, in actuality, a solar occultation at the same time that it is a terrestrial eclipse of the earth by the moon. A lunar eclipse is a genuine eclipse.
