From ArticleWorld

Proteins are large biomolecules also called macromolecules. They are essentially polymers of repeating amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Proteins are essential to all living cells and play several roles. They may serve as enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions in cells, structural proteins, regulatory proteins, hormones and as defensive proteins such as antibodies. Proteins are also important for nutritive value as they may be broken down to provide amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the organism itself. Proteins are one of the most studied biomolecules in biochemistry.
