From ArticleWorld

Generally, salts are ionic compounds that form crystals. They are quite often water soluble, which separates the two ions. (Solutions of salts in water are called electrolytes.) As a rule, salts have quite low hardness, low compressibility, and a high melting point. This being said, there are also salts that are liquid at room temperature (ionic liquids). When molten, or dissolved, salts have the ability to conduct electricity.
