Traumatology is a broad category of scientific and medical study that deals with how higher animals and specifically, humans, respond to a physically-traumatizing event. Some traumatologists use “crash test dummies” to study the forces applied to an individual in various traumatic conditions. Others study wound formation and healing in the body. Medicine uses this information to learn ways of better treating patients inflicted with a traumatic illness. In nearly every major hospital, doctors treat trauma patients using a triage system which separates major injuries from minor ones.
