India is a very diverse country and many cultures co-exist with a common thread, apparent in rituals, musical instruments and beliefs. Religion and philosophy play a large role in shaping various cultures of India. Different invading cultures have left their impressions on Indian culture vastly. Most notable among them are the influences on language, dressing mode and forms of greetings in day-to-day life. The rulers who had lasting impressions were the Mughals and recently the British.

Art and Dance

Folk arts are largely region specific and had a veritable influence on official proceedings in ancient India, right till the times of Mughals rulers. It was during the British rule over India, that folk forms were eclipsed. However, after gaining independence, a renewal effort has been bearing fruits to revive the folk art.

Indian music, dance and drama are age-old and have evolved through centuries inculcating the influence of the invading rulers. Amongst the oldest literary works are found in India, signifying the rich heritage that Indian culture inherits. Religion and spirituality are found invariably in the various literature works. Dances in India are easily recognized as folkdance (usually group dances) and classical dances. (mostly solo or enactment) the more famous classical dances are Kathkali, Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi.

Indian music is classified broadly as Aryan and Carnatic. The north and south Indian forms. Apart from these academically inspired forms, modern Indian music is a mix of folk, pop, and filmy music.

Indian paintings and carvings are an integral part of architecture and expressions devoted mostly to religion, lifestyles and worship.
