A recently divorced woman, with a little girl and not much money, rents a rundown apartment. The daughter doesn’t like the place and neither does, but she has little choice. There is great access to good schools, so she takes it. The daughter finds a backpack and is told she can have it, if it remains unclaimed.

Plot

After a mother, Dahlia(Jennifer Connelly) and her daughter, Ceci (Ariel Grade)move into a rundown apartment on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan, strange things begin to occur. Dahlia has very little cash due to a recent divorce, and now she’s in a custody battle with her ex. Ceci doesn’t really like the place.

There is a problem with the ceiling. It keeps leaking, but the custodian(Pete Postlethwaite)refuses to repair it. He claims that nobody has lived there for six months.

Ceci finds a backpack and is told by the keeper that she can have it if no one shows-up to claim it. Ceci wants to stay, now. Also, Ceci strikes up a friendship with an imaginary friend, Natasha, who may be real.

After meeting Natasha, Ceci’s behavior undergoes a drastic change. She’s becoming a problem in school. Dahlia is under pressure due to the custody matter which gets ugly and problems with Ceci.

Resolution

The keeper tells Ceci that the backpack has been claimed. The backpack is in the basement. It belongs to Natasha. Dahlia goes to the basement to retrieve it. Then, Natasha is discovered on the roof. She is found in the water supply. Each of her parents thought she was with the other. Ceci is now in the grip of Natasha’s spirit, and is trapped by her, locked in a bathroom. Dahlia promises to be her new mother if she releases Ceci.

The police are able to release Ceci, but Dahlia is dead. Ceci’s father gets his custody of Ceci. On the way out of the house with her father, the elevator is stuck. Dahlia’s spirit tells Ceci that her spirit is now the mother of Natasha’s spirit.
