Draco Malfoy is a fictional character in J.K. Rowling’s series of Harry Potter books. He is in the same year as Harry at Hogworts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is in Slytherin House. Draco’s description is that of a pale-faced boy with aaa sharp – featured face, white – blond hair and grey eyes. Harry thinks that Draco is arrogant and spoiled and thinks only of himself.

The name is derived from a Latin term meaning ‘dragon’ and the surname Malfoy, from an old French term Mal Foi, meaning ‘bad faith’.

Background

The son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, Draco belongs to a family of pure – bloods. All of them harbor feelings of intense dislike against mud – bloods and even muggles. The relationship between Draco and his father is not clearly portrayed, merely hinted at. Draco boasts about his father’s achievements while Lucius is prone to criticizing and rebuking him. Lucius is a Death Eater and Draco replaces him when he is captured.

In the books

In ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, Draco makes his first appearance and tries to befriend Harry on the Hogworts Express. Harry’s refusal marks the beginning of their enemity. Draco is shown as a bully accompanied by Crabbe and Goyle.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, Draco joins the Slytherin Quidditch team as Seeker because of his father’s generation donation of new brooms for the entire team. Draco is a favorite with the Potions master Professor Snape and hence gets away with a lot of stuff.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban’, Draco doesn’t do anything significant except to try and get Rubeus Hagrid fired. He pretends to have suffered a grave injury from an angry Hippogriff at one of Hagrid’s lessons.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, Draco continues to goad Harry on the tiniest of issues. He distributes the “Potter Stinks” badges during the Triwizard tournament and shows them proudly to Harry out of sheer spite and jealousy.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’, Draco supports Doroles Umbridge and becomes a part of her Inquisitorial Squad. He is the one to catch Harry that leads to the exposure of the secret Defense Against the Dark Arts Club called “Dumbledore’s Army”.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’, Draco has a crucial role to play. He becomes a Death Eater and is given the task of killing Dumbledore. He attempts it twice, albeit half – heartedly, and fails. He is also instrumental in making an entry point to Hogworts for Death Eaters via the Vanishing Cabinet. Another aspect of Draco is revealed when he is found by Harry crying in a toilet with only Moaning Myrtle for company. He ultimatly corners Dumbledore but when the time comes for action, he falters and Snape takes over and kills Dumbledore.
