From ArticleWorld

An Executive Director is appointed by the Board of Directors to lead the organization in the achievement of its goals and is accountable to them.

An Executive Director is the senior manager of an organization, company or corporation. They are appointed by the Board of Directors and answer to them. Their role is the management and leadership of the organization in the achievement of their goals. Their tasks are many and include organizing, leading and co-coordinating activities and the resources of the organization.

In order to achieve these goals, the holder of this position must be experienced and have knowledge and skills appropriate to the company he or she works for. They are usually paid for their work as distinct from members of the Board of Directors who do not receive remuneration. It is a term used by many non-profit organizations that prefer not to use the name Chief Executive Officer because of the corporation connotations it holds.

Executive directors must implement board decisions and maintain the smooth operation of the company by working closely with the senior management. In some parts of the world, the executive director and the chairman of the board can be the same person, but in the European Union, they must be separate in order to ensure that one person cannot gather too much power.
