GGSN

From ArticleWorld

GGSN stands for Gateway GPRS Support Node. This is essentially a network node that acts as a gateway between a GPRS wireless data network and other networks like the Internet and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

The GGSN acts as the anchor point that enables the mobility of the terminal that is present in the GPRS or UMTS networks. All necessary routing information and mechanisms needed for tunneling the Protocol Data Units (PDUs) along their route.

The GGSN as provided by major technological players normally aims to be compliant with the necessary relevant GSM and WCDMA standards. This service, in leading companies like Ericsson, comes with advanced features like Packet Inspection and Service Classification (PISC) that is based on the deep packet inspection functionality. This advanced functionality allows for the detection of different types of user traffic downloads, IP multimedia electronic mail, and advanced protocols built on the TCP/IP, like the voice over internet protocol (VoIP). This technology has made possible peer-to-peer file sharing as well.

Advantages of GGSN technology

There are several beneficial advantages of the GGSN technology. Listed below are some of the important ones:

  • Enhanced stability: the GGSN technology has developed as popular solution for providing high availability in vast commercial GSM and WCDMA networks across the globe.
  • Improved scalability: there is improved scalability with the use of GGSN technology. Scaling from the basic entry-level capacity of 10k PDP context to 3000k PDP is possible. The throughput capacity remains unchanged all through the scaling and there is no need for any upgrade from of the hardware platform or the immediate installation of a new software release.
  • Value added services: a number of value added services come associated with GGSN technology services. This serves to enhance its versatility and application.
