A hairbrush is a hair care product that is used to detangle and clean human hair or the fur of a domestic animal.

A brush is typically used on longer or thicker hair. A comp is often used on shorter or thinner hair. On a horse’s tough hair, a product similar to a brush, known as a currycomb, is used.
How a hairbrush works
A hairbrush works similar to the stroking or licking nature that conditions another person (or animals ) hair. The motion is perceived as affection and/or a bonding experience and is known to have a soothing effect. Some animals react positively, for example a cat that is being stroked by a hand or a brush, it starts to purr.
Types
Hairbrushes come in several styles:
- Round barreled. Small or medium widths work best on short hair and big barreled work best on medium or long hair. They give texture to hair.
- Half-round, which are suitable for all hair types, for all types of grooming, styling or blow-drying.
- Vent or tunnel brushes that are ideal for use when blow drying.
- Paddle brushes with large, flat bases which are ideal for medium or long length hair.
- Straightening brushes, which can be used with lotions and relaxants and have vents for use with a blow dryer.
Types of bristles
A variety of bristles exist from a variety of materials. They are formatted in a variety of ways. Wide spaced or staggered rows work best for thick or curly hair and thinner spacing is ideal for short or thin hair. Bristles can be natural, nylon/plastic or made of rubber pads.
Other uses
A hairbrush is shaped in a similar way to a small paddle and it is, in some cases, used as a spanking implement (especially in the United States). This makes it easy to use for erotic spanking, or for spanking a child.
