Linen is produced from flax fiber. The tradition in Ireland is based on the fact that it grew there way before it appeared in Europe. This was because of the natural climate, which was not favorable for this type of agriculture. After hundreds of years and due to advanced production methods, it became known and produced in Europe as well. Because of the massive production boom the linen production experienced and the demand it currently enjoys, Ireland is not only producing but also importing linen yarn from European countries such as France, Belgium and The Netherlands. It is used for a variety of product. For instance, because of the strength it has when wet, Irish Linen, it is used as a billiard cue wrap, so that sweat can be absorbed.

Irish

Linen becomes Irish Linen when it is spun in Ireland, from flax fibers and woven in the same country from 100% linen yarns. If it also contains another textile besides 100% pure linen then it will not be labeled as Irish Linen. Popularity is a big part of the tradition linked with the craft. Irish Linen has always been popular and categorized as top quality. Because of this, different goods obtained from it will be shipped world wide. A common misconception appears because of the nowadays used label “Made in X”. X is the country where the given product was produced and a combination like “Irish Linen made in France” can appear. If one sees “Irish Linen” on a good then he/she must know that the linen was produced in Ireland and the actual product (sweater, piece of clothing etc.) is the one that was assembled and tailored in the X country.
