Jennifer Lopez is a popular singer and actress, known for albums like Jenny from the Block and movies including Selena and Maid in Manhattan. Jennifer Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in the Bronx section of New York City. This young woman “from the block” has become one of the staples of popular music and movie culture.

Acting Career

Contrary to those who peg her first as a music performer, Jennifer actually started out with the acting bug. Her supporting role in her first film in 1995, My Family landed her a nomination for the Independent Spirit award that same year. Possibly the greatest shining moment of her acting career, was when she landed the role of the late Selena Quintanilla-Perez in the 1997 film Selena. She received the 1998 Alma award for her portrayal of the real-life singer. Subsequent film success followed, including such films as Out of Sight (1999 Alma award for Outstanding Actress), The Wedding Planner (2001) and Maid in Manhattan (2002). She has many films slated for production and release in the next 2 years. Bordertown and El Cantante are set to be released in 2006 and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released in 2007.

Music Career

Lopez, while becoming immensely popular in the world of music, has never forgotten her humble roots. Many songs and album titles reflect aspects of what her world was like as she was growing up in New York. Her debut album entitled On the 6 referred to a subway line she used to take and her #1 hit Jenny from the Block (from her 2002 album, This Is Me… Then) speaks of staying grounded, not forgetting her roots in the midst of her fame.

Since 1999 she has released a total of 5 wildly successful albums and currently has two albums, a Spanish language and English language album, in production due to be released in 2006. Her most recent album, Rebirth, was released in March of 2005 and debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts.

Fashion Career

Jennifer Lopez has been active in the fashion industry as well. Her clothing line, JLO by Jennifer Lopez, is hugely popular as is her 2003-launched line entitled Sweetface. 2003 also saw the launch of her fragrance, Still in addition to her already released fragrance, Glow. She plans on releasing a clothing line and fragrance for men in mid-2006.

Relationships

Lopez is probably most famous for her various relationships and marriages. Over the span of 7 years, she has been married and divorced twice. She was engaged to film actor, Ben Affleck from 2002 to 2004. They eventually broke of the engagement in January of 2004.

June of 2004, Lopez married singer, Marc Anthony. There was some speculation as to whether the “hurriedness” of the wedding was due to a pregnant bride. Lopez has denied this allegation, although nothing was ever completely confirmed. While they do not yet have a child of their own, Jennifer has become a stepmother to Anthony’s 3 children from his previous relationships.
