One-night stand

From ArticleWorld

When two individuals engage in a sexual encounter and at least one party has no long-term or romantic interest in one another, a one-night stand is said to have occurred. A one-night stand differs from a one-night sexual encounter in that there is no expectation for a one-night stand to expand beyond the sole encounter. They differentiate from prostitution in that no money changes hands; a one-night stand is purely for the pleasure of both parties.

What is a one-night stand?

The activity that occurs during a one-night stand relies on the participants to define it. A one-night stand can be classified as full intercourse, oral sex, heavy petting or making out.

Who has a one-night stand?

Most commonly, individuals who participate in a one-night stand have not known each other long; oftentimes having only met the night of the occurrence.

In Western society, there is often a stigma associated with the practice.

One night stands were particularly popular in the decadent period from 1960-1980, where participants would meet at bars, nightclubs, health clubs and other public places with the intent of finding a one-night stand. At the end of the evening, terms like “taking someone home” or “coming up for coffee” were used to imply that sex would happen.

The risks

One-night stands, as with casual sex, focus on pleasure. But with pleasure comes some risk.

There are emotional risks: Someone may think the action would lead to a romantic or long-term relationships or it could cause problems if a future spouse or committed partner finds out about previous indiscretions. And, naturally, there is the risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease.
