Public space

From ArticleWorld

Public space is the term used to define any space that belongs to the public, is financed by the public and is for use of the public. Thus, public schools, municipal parks, fields, etc that are free and open for the use of public and hence belong to the public, may be included under public space.

Standard public spaces

Put quite simply, public space is any area that is accessible by pedestrians or vehicles. It includes roads, pavements, town squares and buildings. It also includes indoor and outdoor open areas. Museums, theaters, swimming pools, and tennis courts, which sometimes charge a nominal admission but which are subsidized by the government through taxes are all included under this head. Thus, it also follows that police and fire protection and emergency room care should fall under the purview of public spaces.

To further the argument, public space interestingly also includes malls (private space that looks like public space), fresh air, right to use a wide range of information through the wireless, and admission to the political procedure through voting. A public library, railway platforms and waiting rooms of public transport may be included under semi-public spaces.

Public space-the Good Samaritan

For tourists who travel on a shoe string budget and for a city’s homeless, public spaces like parks and rest rooms are a god send. Benches in parks and heating in waiting and rest rooms provide comfort to the destitute that are dependent on them for their day to day survival.
