A sex toy is any device that is used for the facilitation of sexual pleasure or to enhance the sexual experience. A sex toy is not related to contraception or pornography but is used directly to provide sexual satisfaction or sexual stimulation to an individual or to a couple.

For Men and Women

Sex toys come in a wide variety of styles that, in turn, have a wide variety of functions. Those that can be used for men or women include:

  • Anal beads, which are a string of beads inserted into the anus and slowly pulled out at the time of orgasm to enhance its length and strength.
  • Electrodes can be used to stimulate a part of an individual’s sexual anatomy by the application of a small amount of electricity.
  • Sex machines operate as an electric-powered device mimicking penetrative sex.
  • Strap-on dildo is worn by a woman in order to penetrate a man or another woman.
  • Nipple clamps can be worn that provide constant stimulation to the nipple during sex.
  • Sex games are generally traditional board games or card games that invite the participants to engage in some kind of sex act.
  • A penis sleeve is worn on the penis like a condom but has soft bumps on it that serve to increase stimulation to the person being penetrated.

Toys for Men

Toys directly for the penis are generally for men only but this is not always the case:

  • Pocket vaginas are used to simulate a real vagina for the purpose of penetration by a male penis, usually engaging in a form of masturbation.
  • Cock rings are worn for therapeutic reasons and for sexual pleasure. Placed at the base of the penis, the penis remains engorged longer and allows for a larger penile erection. It can be used in erectile dysfunction as well.
  • A triple crown is a cock ring that also includes a device that pulls the testicles away from the body and results in a more satisfying orgasm.
  • A penis extension is a hollowed-out sleeve that increases the length of the penis when it is inserted into the sleeve.

  • A sex doll is usually an anatomically-correct inflatable doll used to simulate the presence of a sexual partner.

Toys for women

Some sex toys are used primarily by women either alone or with a partner:

  • A dildo is a device that is shaped like a penis and is used for sexual stimulation or for artificial penile penetration.
  • A vibrator is a device of many different shapes that cause a vibrating sensation when turned on and is used for sexual stimulation both inside and outside the vagina.
  • A double-ended dildo is for the purpose of penetration of both members of a couple. Two females can use this in a sex act together.
  • Ben-Wa balls are hollow metal balls inserted into the vagina for the purpose of enhancing the female orgasm.

Ultimately the decision to use a sex toy is one that an individual or couple must make for themselves. In some jurisdictions, the sale of such items is regulated by law.
