The terrier is a collection of smaller hunting dog breeds that were originally used for hunting vermin such as otter, fox and badger. Terriers are known to be very brave and tend to be energetic, even hyperactive. Because of their size and lively personality they are very popular as house pets.

History

The majority of breeds in the terrier line were originally bred in the British Isles. Most often they were used to hunt small vermin both above and below ground. The word terrier comes from the early Latin word ‘’terra’’, which of course, means earth. Some terrier breeds can be traced as far back as the early 13th century in England. The term terrier covers a group of many dog breeds and is not a breed itself. Terrier breeds come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Terrier breeds are divided into four types; Hunting Terriers, Show Terriers, Working Terriers and Toy Terriers.

Characteristics

Terriers are generally a smaller type of dog with an energetic disposition and a fondness for digging. Weighting in at 23 to 32 kg (50-70 lbs), the Airedales’ are the largest of the terrier breeds and usually have a black saddle color pattern with tan legs, ears and head. The Boston Terrier is an American breed typically white and marked with sections of black, brindle or seal. Seal is a color only used to describe Boston Terriers. American Pit Bull Terriers were originally bred for dog fighting, however they are very loving dogs and loyal dogs. Selecting a Pit Bull Terrier with a low aggression level, and socializing the dog early will lead to a very sweet and loving house pet.
