Human positions may be defined as the different positions that a human body assumes in its normal day to day activities. It is also the term used to define a person’s attitude and body language. The body language of a person can communicate many different things about that person; it may let slip thoughts and attitudes that he/ she is not aware of revealing.

Normal positions

When stationary, human body can assume many normal positions. Some of the common human positions are:

  1. sitting: This is the position a human body adopts when using a chair or bed or ground or anything flat. In this position the knees are bent and the buttocks are resting on something flat and the back is vertical and straight, but not stiff. When sitting on a chair the feet rest on the ground, flat, and the legs may be crossed either at the knees or at the ankles.
  2. standing: This is the position when the human body is totally erect, knees straight and feet on the ground. A person has the option of standing free or leaning against a door or a wall.
  3. lying: This is the position a person adopts when relaxing. Lying involves that the whole body is horizontal to the ground, either lying on the ground itself or on a bed or a couch.
  4. on all fours: When a little baby first learns to move about, this is the position it assumes initially. Walking on all four involves keeping the palms flat down on the ground and knees bent and resting on the ground.

Posture

A posture is the attitude of a human body. It is the arrangement of a body and its limbs and may also be known as carriage. It is the positioning of the different body parts in relation to one another. A good posture may be achieved by vertically aligning the different parts of the body (head, shoulders, abdomen, and hips) and allowing for the natural curve of the spine with minimal distortions. An erect posture acts as a natural form of exercise by burning out calories and toning the neck, back and stomach muscles.

Famous people with erect carriage

Besides being a competent way of exercise, an erect posture is physically attractive. Some people who are known for their straight backs are Katherine Hepburn, Tom Cruise, Nadia Comaneci and Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur.
