From ArticleWorld

Energy is the capacity of matter to perform work; hence it is a measurable property of a physical system which may be modified due to the application of a force. Though the two basic forms of energy are kinetic and potential energy, there are several other forms such as thermal energy, electrical energy, radiant energy and atomic energy. The sum total of all in a system remains constant.

Such forms and their possible inter-conversions can be monitored by either observation or by systematic set-ups, which can help in the execution of desired processes or aid further exploration of the numerous uses of energy. Energy is harnessed to make man’s life easier and venture into the still-unexplored domains of nature.
