From ArticleWorld
An obsolete scientific theory is a scientific theory that, though once widely accepted, has since been discarded. The accepted scientific method uses experimentation and peer review to create consensus in the scientific community that a principle is beyond substantial doubt. However, since scientific theories can never be proven incontrovertibly, only the opposite, more often than not the scientific method is aimed at falsifiability, i,e, disproving a currently acceptable theory, rendering it obsolete.
