Gemstones are naturally occurring crystalline forms of a mineral. These are often desired for their beauty, durability and rarity. Gemstones are usually very valuable for this reason. Gemstones can be cut and polished for use in jewelry or for other ornamental purposes. Some examples of gemstones include diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, aquamarine, topaz and opal. Of the gemstones perhaps the most popular today is the diamond which is famous for its hardness and the way it disperses light. This makes it useful as both an ornament and in industrial uses.
