Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman is an American author who had her first book, Property Of, published in 1977 when she was 21 years old and a student at Stanford University. Her most famous novel is Practical Magic, which was converted to film in 1998.

Education

After growing up on Long Island and graduating from high school in 1969, Hoffman attended Adelphi University. She was later a Mirrellees Fellowship at the Stanford University Creative Writing Center and earned her master’s in creative writing.

Career

During Hoffman’s writing career, she has published 15 novels, two short fiction books and six children’s books. Among these include Here on Earth in 1997, which was her adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, and Practical Magic in 1995, for which she is most known. Practical Magic was later made into a movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Most of Hoffman’s books deal with magic, irony, and relationships.
