Bangalore finds its mention in the pages of history as it had been under siege quite a many times owing to its location and serene surroundings. Almost all dynasties and rulers like the Cholas, the Vijay Nagar Emperors, the Marathas, the Mughals as well as the British had an eye for this land. Tipu Sultan, the last Emperor ruling over this region fought tooth and nail to ward off repeated invasions of the British for long. The fall of Tipu Sultan opened up the access to the southern part of India for the British.

Developments

After the Independence of India, Bangalore reformed a heavy industrial manufacturing base with industries like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Indian Space Research Organization, paving the route for many ancillary units, thus grooming the industrial activities. In the recent past owing to the software boom and the pleasant climate in Bangalore, Indian IT companies along with many multinationals have set up their base and have flourished making Bangalore the IT hub of the east. This industry alone employs more than 30% of India’s total IT professionals’ population of about a million. It is also the scientific hub of India and home to some of the most prestigious Indian institutes like the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the Raman Research Institute to name a few.

After the Space Commission and Department of Space was established in 1972, ISRO was created and is still the premier space research organization, head quartered in Bangalore. The Principle objective is, to put indigenous satellites and launch space vehicles. The first Indian satellite, “Aryabhatt” was developed by the scientists of ISRO and successfully launched. Many other satellites like Bhaskara, Rohini, Apple and the INSAT series have since have been launched, bringing India on the global space map. The ambitious Moon Program is also headed by scientist at ISRO.

The Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore houses the largest number of Information Technology companies in India. Global giants have found India and particularly Bangalore- a fitting place to set up operations to cater global markets given the skill and large man power available.

Bangalore is the major hub for Bio-Technology activities with at least 97 out of 240 such companies having facilities here. The vision and policy of Karnataka Government has aided in attracting high end technical manufacturing and operations base, in the city of Bangalore. Bangalore has the nation’s maximum venture capital funding in Bio-Technology sector.
