Aerobic exercise is the antonym of anaerobic exercise. The term "aerobic" strictly means "with oxygen" and in this case it is used in connection with the use of oxygen in the muscle energy-generating process. Any exercise that that is performed at a medium level of intensity and for a longer period of time is considered to be an aerobic exercise because it increases the individual's heart rate and uses oxygen to create the needed energy fuel for the physical cells.
