Criminal Law is the body of common and statutory law that deals with crime and punishment for criminals. The term must not be used as a synonym with civil law. Criminal law processes start with an alleged crime. One party (called complainant) files an accusation that is to be investigated by the police. A report usually called complaint is created and taken to the suitable jurisdiction. If the offence is considered a felony it will be referred to a grand jury with the purpose of indictment.
