The sport of field hockey is considered to be the oldest of the so called “stick and ball” games. Appearing at least 1,000 years before the advent of the Olympics, field hockey today is played internationally by both men and women. Like ice hockey, it is a fast-paced sport with players of one team using sticks to maneuver a ball past players of the opposing team and into their goal. There are 11 players per team and the game takes place on an outdoor field roughly the size of a U.S. football field.
