A fuel cell is a device in which a chemical reaction’s energy is utilized in order to produce electrical power. Roughly half of the fuel cell’s energy output can be successfully transformed into electrical energy, while the remaining half gets dissipated as heat. Essentially consisting of two electrodes in an electrolytic solution, a fuel cell requires a supply of fuel, usually hydrogen, and an oxidant (oxygen) to keep the reaction going. Fuel cells are already being applied in various ways. More energy-efficient applications in cogeneration, automobiles and other fields continue to be explored.
