Independent films (or indie film) are movies produced without initial financing or distribution by a major movie studio. In most cases a film that receives less than 50% of their budget from a major studio is also named independent. Indie films developed at a rapid rate after the invention of digital cameras. Before that, camera equipment was very expensive and few people could afford it. Nowadays, one third of all independent films in US come in New York.
